Rohingyas Under Siege in Myanmar – August 2024

The Rohingya Community Service of Georgia (RCSG) is gravely concerned about the recent escalation of violence against the Rohingya population in Myanmar’s Rakhine State. The situation has deteriorated significantly, with both the Arakan Army (AA) and the Myanmar government being implicated in attacks on Rohingya communities.

The AA has intensified its military activities in the Maungdaw region, leading to severe human rights violations against Rohingya civilians. Reports indicate that AA forces have carried out drone strikes and other attacks, resulting in mass casualties. The ongoing conflict has forced many Rohingya to flee their homes in search of safety .

The Myanmar military has continued its operations in the region, contributing to the chaos and insecurity faced by the Rohingya. The government’s failure to protect civilians and its involvement in violent crackdowns have exacerbated the humanitarian crisis. Many Rohingya find themselves trapped in a conflict zone, facing violence from multiple fronts.

The intensified conflict has led to a growing number of Rohingya attempting to escape to Bangladesh. A recent incident saw a boat carrying Rohingya refugees capsize in the Naf River, leading to multiple deaths, including children. The dire conditions underscore the urgent need for international intervention and support.

RCSG calls on the international community to take immediate action to address the humanitarian needs of the Rohingya and to hold accountable those responsible for the violence. We urge governments, organizations, and individuals to stand in solidarity with the Rohingya people and support efforts to ensure their safety and dignity.
